Stonehouse---Toano, VA
Stonehouse was designed by the iconic Mike Strantz. Some of his work is ground breaking and pushes the
boundaries of golf course architecture as we know it today. In fact in 2001 and 2002, Stonehouse received a
wide variety of awards and recognition for the design work and the course itself.
The course itself is a very fun course. Classic Strantz greens, elevation changes, blind shots, and the whole nine
yards. The course is challenging, no doubt. But if you can get over the mental intimidation, you can see the way
to play almost each and every hole and put up a good score. There are usually spots which will give the golfer
some leeway in terms of where to miss and still have a recovery shot. However, there are spots where doubles
and triples will be inevitable.
Strantz has a cult following with his unique and borderline genius design ideas. And this is deserved 100%. But
his style of golf just isn't my cup of tea for every day play. I love seeing his courses and I love playing them for a
change of pace. If you haven't played one of his courses, you need to.
But for my everyday golf, I prefer more straight-forward golf courses.
It measures 6,551 yards from the black tees and is rated 73.3/136.
