The Standard Club-Duluth, GA
-18th best course is Georgia (Golf Digest)
The Standard Club is a very interesting club located in a very busy part of the affluent Northern Atlanta suburbs.
However, once you enter the clubs gates you almost forget you are in the hustle and bustle of the city. The
course itself is very well wooded and you rarely if ever catch a glimpse of the city.
The "linksy" feel of the course is reminiscent of Cuscowilla. Long native grass surrounds many of the fairways
making up the 2nd cut of rough. Many of the bunkers have overgrown edges adding to the natural feel to the
course. Although the course is an original Arthur Hills design, it was completely renovated by Mike Riley in 2005.
Below is a picture of hole 6, a par 3 that plays over many of these natural feeling bunkers. I have also included
pictures of the par 3 8th, which further detail the "feel" of the course.
Hole #7 is one of the best holes on the course and I describe it as a "thinking man's par 5".
However, the members are most proud of the par 3 17th. This hole is quite beautiful and actually has desert golf
feel to it. From the black tees, it plays 200-ish yards from an elevated tee box, over a pond and a duel water fall,
and the green is surrounded by bunkers with a stone wall that has that desert canyon feel to it.
Being in the city the course is somewhat tight, but the shortness of the course makes that tightness fair and
necessary. The greens are somewhat small and have a lot of undulation to them. It is well maintained and seems
to get a relatively moderate amount of play, this adds to the feel of a well maintained course.
It plays 6,615 yards from the black tees and is rated 72.4/138.
