The Plantation Course—Sea Island, Georgia
Course Ratings as of December 11, 2009
-10th best public course in Georgia (Golfweek)
For starters, the Sea Island Resort is a phenomenal golf get-a-way. 3 courses are available for guests to play,
the Lodge is rated as the “World’s Best Golf Hotel” by Golf Digest and the Cloisters is rated at the #3 hotel on that
same list. You will be treated to some of the very early history of golf in America at this resort as well as recent
golf history. It is a must visit golfing mecca.
Concerning The Plantation Course, it is like a nice bowl of delicious vanilla ice cream. It is good, you will enjoy
eating (playing) it, but its plain and straight-forward. There is nothing bad about it, but it is not truly memorable.
The course was originally a 9 hole design which Walter Travis laid out in 1927. H.S. Colt and Charles Alison
made a few tweaks to the course in 1929, while Dick Wilson added its other 9 in 1960. Finally, Rees Jones added
his touches in 1998.
A few things will jump out you while playing The Plantation Course are; the condition of the course and its
bunkering.
The course itself is maintained at a very high level. The fairways are in fantastic shape and the greens are nearly
flawless. Now, remember it is a resort course. This means the greens will be receptive to approach shots and
they will roll true. So, scoring opportunities will present themselves.
The bunkers are beautiful and they are everywhere.
The course makes for a very enjoyable round of golf. It is rated 71.3/130 from the middle tees and plays 6,326
from those same tees.
