Old South is a moderately priced public golf course designed by Clyde Johnston. It is located in the Low Country of South Carolina and given the nature of this type of land, golf shots are fun and the landscape is interesting.
I think what I like most about the course is that it doesn’t pretend to be something it is not. It is not trying to give you Augusta National type of conditions and it is not trying to give you an Oakmont level of difficulty. It is a public golf course designed to be fun and that is exactly what it is; fun golf.
It has some quirky architectural features which keep the golfer thinking throughout the entire round. On a pretty wide open and mundane par 4, they throw a tree in the mix right before the green. You can go over it, under it, or around it…you just need to calculate that into your strategy at the start of the hole. Otherwise, you might be SOL!!
Old South also gives you some Old School architecture, like the Alps hole concept first espoused at the historic Prestwick and copied by many other golf courses including The National Golf Links of America.
All in all, this is a fun course that measures just under 6,400 yards from the middle tees and is rated 70.4/132.
