Musgrove Mill—Clinton, SC
Musgrove Mill is a private destination club with a golf course designed by Arnold Palmer. The club house has a very
elegant but rustic feel to it that is full of Southern Charm. Off the back deck of the club you can see a number of
golf holes, the most spectacular of the views is watching people finish up their round on 18. Off the club house, you
have two separate guest rooms that overnight guests can rent out. Additionally, there are two separate cottages for
rent. These cottages come fully equipped with numerous bedrooms, full kitchens, fireplaces, pool tables…the
works. It certainly makes for a wonderful visit.
As for the golf course, it is serene. No housing, no neighborhood, no roads, no distractions, pure unadulterated
golf. And make no mistake it is a high brow brand of golf that demands you bring your game with you.
In keeping with the Arnold Palmer’s track record, Musgrove Mill is a relentless test of each golfer’s ability. A
particular area this test focuses on is your approach shot. Tee shots are interesting and varied, but few are
demanding. However, your approach shots need to be dialed in. Sharp edges, steep slopes, shallow greens, and
nasty greenside hazards protect each and every green. Once on the green, the putting isn’t easy…but its certainly
a welcome break from the stress the approach shots put on your game.
Another highlight of the course is the variety imbedded in the holes. You will have long and arduous par 4’s, drop
shot par 3’s, thin and shallow streams to traverse, and massive bunkers to cross. Hooks will be called for, as well as
fades. It is a player’s course, make no mistake about it…but it is fun regardless of the score you post.
Musgrove Mill has a pure golf feel to it, but with all the trimmings to make extended stays a blast.
FYI...a truly excellent hole by hole review can be found here.
