Druid Hills Golf Club--Atlanta, GA
Druid Hills is one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in Atlanta and its golf course was worked on by, the one
and only, AW Tillinghast in 1935.
The course itself is excellent. The greens are quick and well manicured. The sand traps are pristine with the
perfect amount of sand. The fairways are fairly long and NARROW. You must be an accurate ball striker to
succeed at Druid Hills. Grip it and rip it…no sir. Think, plan, and execute.
To me, the defining feature of the course is that the par 3's are long. From the blues, most par 3's are 200 plus
yards with water in play and heavily bunkered. That said you better be good with your 3 wood or 3 iron.
Interestingly enough, many of the par 4's are short. This dynamic makes Druid Hills a very unique and interesting
course. Par 3's generally require the "umph", while the par 4's require precision. And, of course, the par 5's
seem to combine the two.
The hole that always jumps out at me is the par 3 8th hole. It is a 210 yard par 3. The green has a creek right in
front of it, and some really nasty hills behind it. So, unless you feel real comfortable with a precise 210 yard shot
you must lay-up on a par 3 or risk being wet or chipping downhill to a green with water behind it.
Druid HIlls is a high quality course which requires you to think about how you play…given the narrowness of the
course you must be in control of your game or you will be punished. It is sneaky long with the par 3 lengths and
some up hill holes.
In 2003, Bobby Cupp renovated the course to re-establish its original HH Barker "Golden Era" design.

The approach to #7. Grip it and rip it? I don't think so!!!
The par 3 8th at Druid Hills
The short (?) 376 yard par 4 15th hole
Never mind that it is straight up hill!!!
