Cuscowilla -- Eatonton, GA
Rankings per the last time I played in April of 2009:
-22nd best public course in the U.S.(Golf Magazine)
-39th best modern course; #1 Public course in Georgia; 5th best residential course (Golfweek)
-10th best course in Georgia (Golf Digest)
Franky, I am unsure what it is about Cuscowilla…but as soon as you pull into the property, which is located in a high-
end vacation area in rural GA, you know that you are somewhere special. The clubhouse is not overly spectacular,
but it is very nice. There is no awe inspiring waterfalls or anything like that…but you just know this is a special golf
course and the tone and tempo is set by the first hole.
Many of the holes play along water, some of those right on Lake Oconee.
The entire course has a very natural look and feel. The holes have a wide variety of challenges. Some go over
rivers or lakes, some are straight, some have bunkers.
But the real challenge comes from the stress that will be put on your short-game. Bunkers are strategically placed
and the greens are a challenge. None more so than the green on the 5th hole, which is ranked among my 18
favorite holes. The tee shot offers you a key decision, but the shell-backed green will provide the biggest challenge
on this hole. The bottom line is that you must bring you A+ short game to Cuscowilla or you will leave 5 to 10 shots
and your composure on the golf course.
The course is designed by the dynamic duo of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. It is a par 70 and measures 6,402
from the middle tees and is rated 70.1/127.
