Currahee-Toccoa, GA
-Ranked the 49th best residential course (Golfweek)
Mountain Golf at its finest. The course is way up in the mountains of North GA, right on the GA/SC state line. On
the course the tone is set right away on the first tee box. The tee is elevated over 100 yards falls off into a well
bunkered fairway and rises to an elevated green. Many holes have this up and down feel to it. Water comes into
play with mountain streams and ponds. The back nine is chuck full of spectacular mountain top views. Throw in
some great views of Lake Hartwell and you've got a truly beautiful golf course.
The bunkers are just about perfect with ample sand…not too fluffy, not too hard. The fairways are near
immaculate. The greens are not overly undulating and are not particularly fast. You see the challenge is not
putting on this course, it is getting to the greens. Once there, you catch a bit of a break.
Given the variety of holes and challenges the course dishes out, the level of difficulty on this course is quite high.
As the course rating of this Jim Fazio designed course attests to. The Member's tees measure 6,665 and are rated
73/140. This course is a must play for any golf enthusiast…a truly enjoyable experience and necessary test of your
golf game.
However if you are not that good at the game...beware! There are some really difficult holes. The par 3 fourth hole
is the hardest par 3 I have ever played. The hole requires a 190 yard carry over a 75 foot deep "canyon" and the
green has a false front. If you don't carry the full 190, beware the BIG score!!!
The first hole on the course, which is described above, is a great hole as is the 17th at Currahee. Jim Fazio has
described the 17th as the best golf hole he ever built. Once you play it, you will not be able to argue the quality of
the hole and, in fact, the entire course. For further information, check out the club's website.
