Aiken Golf Club---Aiken, SC

John Inglis is credited with designing this course in 1912 and today it is listed on the National Register of Historic
Places.  It certainly has an Old School golfing feel to it as the 6,000 yards the course plays for the tips can attest to.
Nevertheless, it is still a wonderful golfing experience.

The course is well routed and the holes are interesting from start to finish.  The first green smacks you in the face
and lets you know what you are in for during your round.

And that is interesting green placements, courtesy of the routing, combined with tricky green shapes and
wonderfully devilish internal green contours.

The bunkering on the course is also quite good.  At times those bunkers are greenside, while at other times they
can be used to enhance the shot values off the tee.

However even if they are greenside bunkers, the odds are they won’t be your standard, run of the mill, greenside
bunker.

Now when you play Aiken (and you should just as soon as you can) don’t expect a PGA Tour type of golf course.
Like I mentioned earlier, it is only 6,000 yards from the tips and this is as far away from the 7,000 to 8,000 yard
monsters the professional regularly play on as you can get.  Also, the maintenance is not over the top.  The fairways
play fast and firm and the grass isn’t all lush green.  The bunkers may or may not have rakes in them.  You see,
these bunkers are actually hazards…not simply eye candy.

But I think the real kicker is it costs $25 to walk and play a full 18 holes at Aiken Golf Club.  Yep, you heard that
correctly; $25!!!  And for that you get a well routed course with interesting shots and wonderful greens.  This is hard
to beat.
