Achasta--Dahlonega, GA
It is my opinion that Achasta (the old Birch River) is another undiscovered gem that I have, indeed, discovered. It
is a Nicklaus course way up in Northern Georgia. The true beauty of this course is that it is nestled in the north
GA mountains and you get to enjoy all the majestic scenery associated with that. The fall is a mind blowing time
to play up there with all the leaves changing colors.
It is constructed in the way that I find most enjoyable to play golf. There are a few moderately challenging holes
and then an off the charts difficult hole or two. All the while you are surrounded by majestic beauty. If you take
the time to make the trip to Achasta, I guarantee you an enjoyable round. This is in no small way attributable to
the work the Mr. Nicklaus has done to the course, the great scenery provided by the mountains, and to the fact
that the course is NEVER crowded. You will head out to play golf and virtually be assured that you won't be
bothered by a fast playing group behind you or a slow playing group in front of you. Usually, it is just you, your
group, and the course. Frankly, I love that type of environment.
Concerning the course itself, two holes will jump right out at you. The first is the par 5 15th hole, which causes
you to traverse a long and crazy river right in the middle of the hole.
The second is the innocent looking third hole. It is a par 3 that, while stunning in beauty, will kick the butt of the
unsuspecting player. You can't be long, short, right, or left. Hit the green or pay the price. It will frustrate you to
no end, but you will love it at the same time!
The course measures 6,425 yards from the blue tees and is rated 70.5/128.
