Wild Horse—Gothenburg, NE
Rankings as of 8/19/2010—
-26th best modern US course, #1 Public course in Nebraska (Golfweek)
-5th best course in Nebraska (Golf Digest)
Wild Horse is a public course located in a remote area of Nebraska. It was designed by Dave Axland and Dan
Proctor. From the black tees, it is rated 71.1/126 and measures about 6,300 yards. The course earns high
acclaim from many golf architecture gurus, particularly Golfweek magazine. However, I must be honest and say
that I didn’t totally see it during my one play of the course. Now, please don’t misunderstand me in the least. The
course is fun and very affordable, but to be recognized as one the greatest courses in the country…eh, I just don’t
see it.
The green sites are quite good and the maintenance is very good as well. Add in some very interesting holes and
looks at the pin and you’ve got a good and fun course.
But the routing seemed to have many in-line and parallel holes and also seemed to lack the ease and intimacy of
other great courses I have played. Which I believe is the crux of the issue I have with the course. It is good, but
not great. And I went in expecting a great course and played great courses the day before and the days after. All
of this led to a good and fun round, but I was still left wanting more.
Also, the woga is the second cut of rough. This woga is a thick and lush native grass that eats golf balls without
mercy. If you are 6 inches off the first cut of rough, you probably lost your ball. It seemed a severe penalty for
shots that were not all that bad.
Anyway, I don’t dislike the course at all. I just suppose I had sky high expectations that were not met by the
course. Frankly, that is a “me” issue and not a Wild Horse issue. Check it out for yourself and tell me if I need to
play it again.
