Wexford Plantation is an extremely high-end neighborhood located on Hilton Head Island. On top of reaching the neighborhood via land, many residents simply pull their boat up to their house.
The golf course was recently renovated by Arnold Palmer Design Company with Brandon Johnson leading the charge. And to say Mr. Johnson did a good job is an absolute under-statement. He flat out knocked the cover off the ball. I can’t compare what was there before to what was there now. All I can say is that what is there now is something special.
Mr. Johnson and his team used some principles of classic architecture, including a few template hole ideas, to come up with a wonderful golf course that allows for options, creativity, and imagination to become involved in playing a round at Wexford.
The greens are at times big and bold with sweeping contours, like this Biarritz green…
While at other times smaller and table top like.
The approach shots are without fail interesting…
And the bunker complexes were off the charts incredible. Incredible in beauty, but more importantly incredible in interest.
And the par 3’s were simply fantastic. With great bunkering…
Bold and sweeping contours…
Including this incredible redan with Yeaman’s Hall like angles and slope.
I think over time this course should continue to improve with time regarding specific grow-in issues and a tweak here or there. But right now, it is a true delight to play as the course is very fast and firm with great approach shots and great greens.
Add in the fact that the 14th hole is one of my favorite played thus far and you've got great moment after great moment at Wexford.
