University of Kentucky Club Big Blue Course---Lexington, KY

The Big Blue golf course is the members only golf course at The University of Kentucky.  It is located in the horse
country area of Kentucky and the drive into the club is pretty darn neat. There are lots of farms, horses, wide open
spaces, neat fences, and cool, old style, farm houses.  This sets a unique mood.

In the parking lot, there are lots of pick-up trucks, SUV’s and good ol’ boys.  Being from Georgia, this made me feel
at home!!  The Pro in the clubhouse was off the charts friendly, which was a bit shocking as he had no idea who I
was, he never met me, and he knew I was just passing through.  Again, this sets a really good mood.

The course itself is solid.  The routing makes for a pleasant walk.  The course is maintained in good shape and the
greens were very nice to put on.  There were trees, but they never interfered with the playing of the game.  Very
well done.

The only issues were the lack of thrill or drama and the overuse of water on a few holes.  You see although the
routing was fine and the greens fine to putt on, you rarely had a thrilling approach shot or an interesting risk/reward
decision to make.  It was good, but plain vanilla golf.

Also, in the middle of the back nine, holes 13-16, water became such an over used hazard it became almost
comical.  Water to the right…water at the green…water to the left…water, water everywhere.  But it was not
naturally occurring streams, it was odd-looking water hazards…I’d guess streams that were dammed up to make
ponds.  Whatever it was, it looked odd and it was too much.

But then the course became water free and resumed the round of good golf.

In short, The University Club of Kentucky made for a fun day.  Nice people, cool area, and solid golf.
