The Manor Golf and Country Club—Alpharetta, GA
The Manor was designed by Tom Watson in 2006 and it measures 6,738 yards from the blue tees and is rated
72.5/138. It is located in an extremely upscale neighborhood north of Atlanta.
As for the course itself, the first hole begins the way I like a round to begin; with a nice wide open par 4. This eases
the golfer into the round. The second was the most beautiful on the course and was another very nice and solid
par 4.
The course continued to throw one good hole after another at me and I was quite impressed with the variety of the
golf shots required to play well at The Manor. Additionally, the maintenance was quite good; perfectly maintained
fairways and huge greens with great contours and pure turf.
The routing of the course left a lot to be desired, however. You see, I think the course was designed as an amenity
to the neighborhood first and foremost. And, therefore, it primary purposes was to sell real estate. This left the
prime pieces of land for the home sites with the golf course left to be scraped together with the left over chunks of
land. I suppose with that in mind, Tom Watson should be praised immensely. Like I mentioned, the golf holes taken
in isolation are good. But when the entire experience of playing the course is taken into consideration, the course
simply doesn’t flow correctly.
But having said that, The Manor isn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination. It just simply isn’t as good as it could
have been. If you can overlook the fact this routing makes the course close to unwalkable and you are looking to
simply test your golf game, The Manor will fit the bill. As it is certainly a challenge with no respite from the shot
making requirements.
