The Club at Olde Stone—Bowling Green, KY

Olde Stone is a high end community with the golf course being one of its primary amenities.  The course itself is a
truly wonderful collection of golf holes, which are routed throughout the community.  Given the large amount of land
the course covers and the severity of the terrain, the course is basically unwalkable.  So, if you are a die hard
walker…Olde Stone may not be for you.  However, if you love tackling great and challenging golf holes…Olde
Stone is right up your alley.

And make no mistake about it, when I say “challenging golf holes”…I mean it.  And the use of angles at Olde Stone
is the primary reason for the challenge.  Angled fairways, angled greens, angled bunkers…you name it, you got it.
All the angles are designed to make the golfer think and/or be punished for not thinking.  Fairways might be angled
in such a way to make gripping and ripping driver, the non-optimal way to play a particular hole.  Bunkers are
placed and angled in such a way to pinch primary landing areas and open up non-traditional spots.  And the attack
angles to the greens are of vital importance.  Get out of place on your tee shot and the approach angle into the
green will be quiet tricky.

And speaking of tricky…the lead designer of the course, Drew Rogers, flat out nailed me on the 6th hole.  The hole
is kind of a short-ish par 4 with a raised and bunkered green.  But other than that, I saw nothing of importance.
Okay…the green must be really quirky, I thought as the amount of hazards, yardage, and par didn’t add up.  Well,
this is what I saw on the tee box.  So, I ripped a driver right down the pipe.

But then as I approached my ball, which I thought was perfect…as it was long and dead center of the fairway, this is
what I saw.

I laughed and laughed and laughed.  He got me.  Totally got me.  Frankly, this reminded me of 17 at Muirfield with
their little nest of hidden bunkers.  Great stuff!!

The course is full of interesting decisions and golf holes.  But remember, bring your “A” game…this is a tough golf
course.
