Mid-Pines--Southern Pines, NC
Rankings as of 5/1/2010
-6th best public course in NC, 49th best resort course (Golfweek)
Mid-Pines is a golf course designed by the iconic Donald Ross and owned by the legendary Peggy Kirk Bell. With
this type of linage and pedigree, you would think the course would be spectacular and you would be right.
It isn't the ball-busting brute of a golf course that many of the courses located in the sandhills of North Carolina are,
but it certainly offers a challenge. But what is has more than anything is fun. It is pure golf, like many Ross courses,
and it is just a flat out joy to play. It is truly a course I could tee it up on day in and day out and enjoy for the rest of
my life. It has the beauty that I so enjoy while playing, it has the variety that is essential for my enjoyment, and it
offers a big enough challenge to keep you coming back to try to score better and better.
As you can see from the picture above, which is the 15th green, the greens have undulation and interest but they err
on the side of forgiving fairness. And the beauty that surrounds the course is fantastic in a natural way that seems
to go hand in hand with an enjoyable walk in the park that golf is.
However, don't think for a minute that this beautiful walk in the park is a push over of a golf course. If you do, holes
like the 5th...
and 18th will ruin your score card.
From the blues (the tips at this course), it plays 6,528 yards and is rated 71/126.
