Lane Creek—Watkinsville, GA
Lane Creek is an affordable public golf course just outside of Athens, GA. The course was designed by Mike
Young, whom I was first alerted to when I played his gem, Longshadow. Although I prefer Longshadow a bit more
than Lane Creek, Lane Creek is a very fine golf course.
I think the best aspect of Lane Creek are the greens and the green complexes. Attack angles need to be
calculated when making approach shots and shelves, slopes, and ledges need to be accounted for when both
approaching and putting these greens.
The main attraction here is the 14th hole. It is a wonderful short par 4 (314 from the middle tees) with a nice little
hallow in front of the green to amass a defense. But the true defense is the green. Take all the slopes and
angles and ridges at Lane Creek and combine them into one unbelievable green…and you’ve got 14.
The day I played Lane Creek, my playing partner and I fired multiple approach shots into that green just to see
how playing different shots into the green played out. High flyers rolling off the back ramp, draws, fades, bullets,
floaters. Whatever we could dream up, we tried. It was really fun.
Lane Creek is a nice golf course that I’d recommend to anyone in the area, especially considering the price.
