Harrison Hills is a really cool public course located in rural Indiana. It was originally designed by Langford and Moreau in the 20’s as a 9-holer and Tim Liddy added 9 more holes in the early 2000’s.
The course is full of really interesting quirk and unique architectural features. It reminded me of a cross between Raynor and Strong.
You had chocolate drop mounding from time to time…
And some huge geometric looking bunkers…
You also had some really interesting shots, like this one from the tee on the par 3 2nd hole.
I had two main “knocks” on the course.
#1—The stretch of holes from 10-12 were WAY to penal. The pond between 10 and 11 would be fine if there were not trees heavily impacting the opposite sides of the fairways. This made the holes too long (400-ish yards) with absolutely no bailout areas with a narrow fairway.
And the 12th was a par 3 with trees blocking everything.
#2—The maintenance was no good, especially on the greens. Now, I am not a golfer who needs pristine conditions to play the game. Heck, I really enjoyed Askernish in the middle of nowhere Scotland with its “rustic” conditioning. But many of these greens were simply unputtable as the grass was dead/dying and splotchy.
Nevertheless, if you are close I’d check out Harrison Hills. The features are really neat and most of the holes are a lot of fun.
