Cougar Point--Kiawah Island, SC
Cougar Point has gone through a few designs over the years. In its current state it is a Gary Player design, which
measures 6,875 from the tips and is ranked 73.2/134.
The course itself is located within the confines of the mind blowingly amazing Kiawah Island Golf Resort. Kiawah is
without a doubt one of my favorite places on the face of the earth. The Sanctuary is the greatest family friendly hotel
I have ever stayed in. The beach is my favorite beach on the planet. And The Ocean Course is, to date, the best
designed golf course I have ever played.
As you pull in the gates of the resort, you will see a golf course off to your right. That is the 2nd hole of Cougar
Point. A pretty neat par 3 with a forced water carry and a heavily bunkered green. But it is right by the road, which
unfortunatley is common theme on this course. The holes themselves are pretty ok...here is a look at the dog leg
left par 5 third.
See...not too bad.
And here is the green on the par 4 5th.
Again, pretty great looking...right?
Well, this is as good as it gets. There are bike trails that cut in and around the tee boxes and greens, which totally
distracts the golfer from the game. The routing takes you over busy streets and busy bike trails and destroys any
sense of serenity a golfer could enjoy on this beautiful resort.
And frankly, I am not sure this rushed, hurried, and hectic feeling is Gary Player's fault. I think he did the best he
could given the location of the property and its surrounds. Kiawah is known for The Ocean Course. If you have to
pick between Cougar Point or The Ocean Course, pick Pete Dye's Ocean Course ten times out of ten.
