Cook’s Creek—Asheville, Ohio
Rankings as of 11/27/10…
11th best public course in Ohio (Golf Magazine)
8th best public course in Ohio (Golfweek)
Cook’s Creek is a golf course built by Hurdzan and Fry on John Cook’s family’s farm land. Yeah, you know Mr.
Cook…former US Amateur Champion, PGA Tour and Senior Tour player with 16 professional wins. The course
itself is pretty darn sweet and the land the course is on is even better. No housing, no routing through a
neighborhood, nothing but cool golf and a cool course. The maturity of the land is quite something with the big
trees, creeks, ponds, and all the natural features of central Ohio land. Nice!
The routing of the course is close to ideal. You wind around the property and get to experience some interesting
golf holes which all have names. The holes are highlighted by the par 3’s. The most striking of the par 3’s is the
Strath hole, which was hole 13. Cook’s Creek version of the Strath bunker is a sight not soon to be forgotten.
The par 3 “Pump” hole, the 15th, really captures the essence of Cook’s Creek. It is a great par 3 that plays into an
interesting Cape Style green with a mature tree just off the green and the Cook family farm house just off in the
distance. To me, this photo (which is a sideview of the hole) captures what the course is all about.
I played the Scarlet tees (yeah, that is right Mr. Cook is an Ohio State alumni…scarlet and grey tees) which
measure 6,648 yards and are rated 71.3/128.
